Not all tech workers have it easy

— 12:15 AM on September 6, 2000

The high-tech labor market's tighter than a drum, but even in this market, not every tech worker is wearing pajamas to work, sipping cocktails on "margartia Fridays," and collecting huge bonuses while amassing a fortune in stock options. Software guys have it easy, but hardware guys too often slave away for nothing but the warm adulation of their adoring teenage groupies.

Take my buddy Mike, for example, a Customer Engineer at an auto-ID outfit whose swanky new desk is a symbol of the esteem in which he is no doubt held at his workplace. Cardboard, anyone?

Mike is in negotations with to cut an ad based on his life story. "When I grow up, I wanna sit at a cardboard box desk..."
