Server Wars: A New Hope

— 11:40 PM on November 21, 1999

While trying to catch up with web news after a week at Comdex, I came across this gem of an article at The article discusses the steps Microsoft took to shut third-party NT web server products out of the market, as well as their attempt to dominate the entire web server market. It's an interesting trip through history that brings up some facts (Microsoft's alteration of the NT Workstation license, Andrew Schullman's discovery that Workstation and Server are basically identical) that more recent followers of the Microsoft situation may not be aware of. The gist of the article is that while the DOJ case is focusing on the client side, Microsoft was trying just as hard to monopolize the server side of things, as well. I found it a great read; I recommend it.
