Sun to start selling Intel-powered systems?

— 12:58 AM on January 22, 2007

AMD is currently Sun's exclusive supplier of x86 processors, but that relationship might be about to change. According to The Inquirer, Sun and Intel will announce a partnership later today. Word comes from "sources close to AMD Taiwan," who claim that the CEOs of Intel and Sun are going to announce a "wide ranging deal." The deal will not only place Intel processors inside Sun's servers and workstations, but the two companies will also collaborate on validation, design, and engineering. However, The Inq says the first products to stem from this partnership won't appear until the middle of next year. Sun also doesn't plan to ditch AMD completely, although the number two chipmaker might have to work a little harder to woo Sun in the future.
