Deal of the week: a 500GB hard drive for $139.99

— 3:23 PM on January 26, 2007

For our deal this week, we've spotted an interesting offer on a 500GB Maxtor hard drive. Newegg is running a $30 instant rebate on Maxtor's 500GB MaXLine Pro, bringing the drive's price down from $169.99 to a tantalizing $139.99. At that price, the MaXLine Pro is the cheapest 500GB hard drive we could find that's covered with a five-year warranty. It's also one of the cheapest 500GB hard drives around; 500GB for $139.99 amounts to a scant 28 cents per gigabyte—less than the per-gigabyte cost for Seagate's 320GB Barracuda 7200.10. The MaXLine Pro has a pretty decent feature set, too: 16MB of cache, Native Command Queuing, and support for 300MB/s Serial ATA transfer rates. And because it's the workstation flavor of the DiamondMax 11 we reviewed last year, it should also have the same great multitasking performance and relatively low seek noise levels.
