AMD, SiS, VIA lost chipset market share last year
Both Intel and Nvidia enjoyed significant market share growth in the chipset market last year, according to a report by Korea NewsWire that quotes figures from DRAMeXchange. The report says Intel's chipset market share rose from 41.7% in the fourth quarter of 2005 to 58.3% in the fourth quarter of 2006. Nvidia saw its share increase from 13.1% to 18.4% over the same time period.
Naturally, those gains were made at the expense of AMD, SiS, and VIA. Both SiS and VIA gave up about 10% of the market between Q4 2005 and Q4 2006. VIA's share plummeted from 27.4% to 17.8%, and SiS's slumped from 14.3% to just 4.1%. AMD's chipset market share was more than halved, as well, albeit only from 3.5% to 1.4%. Since AMD now owns the former ATI and recently re-branded ATI's chipsets as its own, though, perhaps AMD will increase its presence in the core logic market this year.
