Unreal engine progress is... unreal

— 11:45 AM on September 9, 2000

The folks at Epic are continually updating the Unreal game/rendering engine, and this Daily Radar feature has info on the latest developments in the technology. The high-polygon characters and dynamic level-of-detail adjustments look very nice, but the big advance in my book is support for large, outdoor areas with realistic-looking terrain. (See this post at Blue's for larger versions of the screenshots in the Daily Radar bit. Saw the link at the 'shack.) This is the future of real-time 3D graphics. The screenshots look absolutely stunning, and I can't wait to see it in action.
