Bigfoot Networks releases cheaper Killer NIC

— 11:31 AM on February 13, 2007

When Bigfoot Networks introduced its Killer NIC network accelerator last year, many complained about the card's hefty $279.99 price tag. The Killer NIC has since dropped to around $250, but Bigfoot has now introduced a significantly cheaper version dubbed the Killer K1. According to the company, the Killer K1 is a version of the Killer NIC stripped of its trademark heatsink as well as support for Flexible Network Architecture applications (FNApps). FNApps for the Killer NIC include a Linux-based firewall and a beta BitTorrent client.

The Killer K1 costs $179.99 at Newegg and $169.99 at TigerDirect, and its price can be brought down further with a $20 mail-in rebate. Bigfoot also says users who purchase the K1 can buy a $30 upgrade from the Killer NIC site to enable support for FNApps. Both Newegg and TigerDirect offer $179.99 Killer K1 bundles with FNA support built in, as well.
