Wii outsold PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 last month
Nintendo's Wii console may not have fancy next-generation graphics, but according to preliminary data from market research group NPD, it was the most popular console in North America by a healthy margin last month. As GamesIndustry.biz reports, NPD's figures say the Wii sold 436,000 units in North America in January, while the Xbox 360 sold 294,000 units, and the PlayStation 3 trailed its two rivals with only 244,000 units sold. This data was released by Microsoft, however, and it has yet to be officially confirmed. Microsoft's Group Manager for the Entertainment and Services Division, Molly O'Donnell, is quoted by GamesIndustry.biz as saying the Xbox 360 "had a fantastic January" and that Microsoft feels great about its position in the marketplace. The Xbox 360 sold 250,000 units in January 2006, so the new NPD figure suggests an 18% year-over-year rise in sales.
