Creative preps a mobile X-Fi XtremeAudio
Although Creative introduced its Sound Blaster X-Fi line of sound cards almost two years ago, the company's notebook offerings are still part of the older Audigy 2 line. According to a report by Notebook Review, though, that's all about to change. The site has come upon several pictures of what looks like a notebook-bound version of Creative's Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeAudio sound card.
The notebook model has an ExpressCard/54 form factor and bears three ports: one stereo headphone port that doubles as an optical audio output, one line-in and microphone port that doubles as an optical input, and a wide and flat connector that can apparently be used to plug an external module with more ports. That module has four ports (front, side, center/sub, and rear) and is presumably designed to hook up an analog 7.1 speaker setup. Notebook Review doesn't say whether the card will accelerate EAX positional audio in hardware, though. Judging by product pages on Creative's website, the desktop version of the X-Fi XtremeAudio does not. (Thanks to DailyTech for the tip.)
