CPU price war to get into full swing in April

— 9:10 AM on March 29, 2007

About a month and a half ago, we heard rumors that Intel was planning to slash prices across its Core 2 lineup on April 22. EE Times now reports the same basic information and date, citing channel sources including one system builder who said, "There will be dramatic price drops on quad-cores." The cuts will range from 20% on the low end to as much as 40% on the high end, EE Times has learned.

Perhaps more surprisingly, the site has heard that AMD will launch new chips and cut prices on April 9. Several of EE Times' sources have said AMD will announce "big discounts" across its Athlon 64 lineup and lower-end chips, although it will reportedly leave pricing for some processors—the Athlon 64 X2 4200+ is cited as an example—unchanged. One source stated, "On April 9, AMD will introduce a bunch of new SKUs and is dropping prices tons," adding that dual-core AMD chips will be available for as little as $70.
