Driver release notes mention a GeForce 8800 GS
Apparently, Nvidia is making a habit of revealing upcoming cards in its ForceWare graphics drivers for Windows Vista. Last month, the nv_disp.inf file in the company's ForceWare 101.41 release listed the G84 and G86 lineups in their entirety. This time, The Inquirer reports that release notes for a so-called 158.19 ForceWare release clearly mention a GeForce 8800 GS graphics card.
Neither the drivers nor The Inq cite specifications or even a potential release date for the card, but it's not too hard to figure out where it might stand. With the GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB selling upwards of $269 and the new GeForce 8600 GTS having an official $199-229 price range, it's not hard to imagine a GeForce 8800 GS sitting somewhere between $230 and $268. Specs-wise, the card may also be a middle-ground between the G80-based GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB and the comparatively anorexic GeForce 8600 GTS, which only has 32 stream processors and a 128-bit memory interface.
