TR Forum Tidings: The 4GB limit

— 5:24 PM on May 22, 2007

For this week's forum tidings post, we've picked out this thread by gerbil newbie heruur. The newcomer asked a simple question—whether he should cough up the extra dough to upgrade his laptop from 2GB of memory to 4GB—but the thread quickly evolved into a rather in-depth discussion about how 32-bit operating systems handle that amount of memory. Some folks will tell you that 32-bit systems are limited to 4GB of RAM, but the truth is a little more complex.

In the end, those who really want or need 4GB of RAM may want to simply upgrade to a 64-bit operating system, provided their hardware supports it. Nonetheless, the gerbils in heruur's thread have already filled two pages with discussion and debate about the benefits of using 4GB of memory (or more) in 32-bit operating systems.
