45nm Core 2 Extreme coming in the fourth quarter?

— 9:06 AM on June 14, 2007

For a while now, we've been hearing rumors that Intel plans to slash desktop processor prices and introduce new chips with 1333MHz front-side bus speeds next quarter. Well, if a report by DailyTech is to be believed, Intel has even more tricks up its sleeve for the fourth quarter. The site says Intel will introduce a quad-core 45nm "Yorkfield" Core 2 Extreme processor as well as a new budget Core 2 Duo E4600 chip in Q4. The Yorkfield part will have a 1333MHz front-side bus, and DailyTech suggests it will be clocked higher than 3GHz. The Core 2 Duo E4600 will reportedly be clocked at 2.4GHz with an 800MHz front-side bus speed and 2MB of cache. It will be priced at $113, the spot currently held by the 1.8GHz Core 2 Duo E4300.

If the information we've heard about AMD's Phenom quad-core chips being scheduled for November or December is correct, then AMD may have to compete with a 45nm quad-core Intel chip on the high-end right as Phenoms begin to roll out. DailyTech doesn't say anything about when 45nm Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad chips will appear, though.
