New PS3 buyers to get five free Blu-ray titles

A new promotion launched by the Blu-ray Disc Association promises to offer five free Blu-ray movie titles to buyers of Blu-ray players. As Ars Technica explains, all Blu-ray players are eligible, including Sony's PlayStation 3. Considering Blu-ray movies typically cost between $20 and $30 each, the offer amounts to a $100-150's worth of free movies—definitely not bad, especially considering standalone Blu-ray players are starting to sink below $500.

There's a catch, though: customers can only pick between one of 21 movies. Ars has a full list, but the titles include Babel, Corpse Bride, The Omen (the 2006 remake), The Phantom of the Opera, Resident Evil: Apocalypse, and Underworld: Evolution. In other words, nothing particularly exciting, but five free movies may certainly sweeten the pot enough for some folks to consider buying a Blu-ray player (or a PS3) instead of a competing HD DVD device.
