Maxtor buys up Quantum

— 7:29 AM on October 4, 2000

IDE conquered SCSI today with the announcement that Maxtor will be buying Quantum's disk drive business for a cool $1.3 billion. Combined, the two will form one of biggest hard drive makers in the world:

The combined company will have an annual shipment rate of more than 50 million hard drives for use in personal computers, as well as certain servers and consumer electronics applications.
Hard to believe Maxtor could end up buying out Quantum. Back in the day, Maxtors were junk, and Quantum was the class of the industry.
