AMD sinks $7.5 million into Transmeta

— 4:10 PM on July 6, 2007

Just over a year ago, AMD and Transmeta entered an agreement whereby AMD would market and ship a "specialized version" of Transmeta's Efficeon processor to emerging markets. Now, CNet reports that AMD has invested $7.5 million in the chip design firm. AMD Chief Operating Officer Dirk Meyer said in a statement, "Transmeta was a key ally in helping to bring our highly successful AMD64 technology to market and has supported the widespread industry adoption of both AMD64 and AMD's HyperTransport technology." According to Meyer, AMD plans to continue to use Transmeta's energy-saving technologies in its own chips.
