TSMC to manufacture AMD processors next year?

— 6:00 AM on July 10, 2007

AMD has made no secret of its intentions to increase its reliance on third parties for production and research, and it looks like TSMC will be one of the companies to benefit from that change. A research note published by the FBR research group says the Taiwanese foundry has scored "high-end CPU biz" from AMD. As EE Times reports, the note says TSMC will produce 45nm microprocessors for AMD. Volume production of the chips is supposedly set to kick off in the second quarter of 2008.

TSMC is already the main producer of graphics processors for AMD's visual media business (a.k.a. ATI). Based on reports we heard earlier this year, TSMC could complete technology qualification on its 45nm process and start 45nm wafer production as early as September of this year.
