Deal of the week: The speediest sub-$100 Athlon

— 5:11 PM on July 13, 2007

Our deal post this week is inspired by AMD's recent price cuts in the Athlon 64 X2 line. As some of you might know, Intel is also expected to cut prices later this month, so it would seem wise not to indulge in a processor purchase quite yet. However, AMD's cuts have placed the Athlon 64 X2 4400+ significantly below the $100 mark, making it a great deal both now and most likely after the rumored Intel cuts. For $91.99 with free shipping at Newegg, the chip offers overall performance slightly higher that that of Intel's Core 2 Duo E4300 according to our "Weighing the value of today's processors" article. Unless Intel pulls the price of the E4300 significantly under the $90 mark, the 4400+ should still be an attractive deal even after Intel brings the hammer down. And considering the 4400+ is based on the 65nm "Brisbane" core, it should have decent overclocking potential, too.
