Google phone coming out within a year?

— 12:11 PM on August 3, 2007

The rumor mill has been grinding away with talk of a Google phone for months now, but a new Wall Street Journal report quoted by InfoWorld suggests the phone does indeed exist and may be hitting stores next year. The report says Google has a prototype ready and that it has already shown that prototype to cell phone manufacturers and network operators. The search giant supposedly intends to offer users free phone subscriptions "by bundling advertisements with its search engine, e-mail and Web browser software applications." And speaking of web browsing, word is that Google intends to build the device so it offers "a better mobile Web browsing experience than current products." The phone could become available within a year, the Wall Street Journal says.
