Lenovo to pre-load Linux on its notebooks

— 6:00 AM on August 7, 2007

We reported nearly a month ago that Lenovo's newly released ThinkPad T61p notebook officially supported three different Linux distributions: Novell's SuSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 and the latest Red Hat and Turbolinux distributions. According to a report by ExtremeTech, Lenovo and Novell have now entered an agreement whereby the PC vendor will pre-load SuSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 on its T-series ThinkPads starting in the fourth quarter of this year.

Lenovo Notebook Product Marketing VP Sam Dusi explains the deal by stating, "We have seen more customers utilizing and requesting open source notebook solutions in education, government and the enterprise since our ThinkPad T60p Linux announcement." ThinkPads pre-loaded with Linux won't be available only to education, government, and enterprise users, however. Extreme Tech says individual customers will also be able to get their hands on the systems.
