Apple files patent for huge notebook touch pad

— 6:00 AM on August 10, 2007

We heard rumors roughly a month ago about Apple cooking up some new MacBooks with touch pads featuring a multi-touch implementation similar to the iPhone's. The implementation was even said to allow users to configure their own gestures to open programs or carry out specific tasks. Well, as Engadget reports, Apple has now filed a patent for a notebook input interface that relies rather extensively on multi-touch technology. The interface calls for a touch pad that essentially takes up the entire area below the notebook's keyboard, wrist rest included. The software behind it would reportedly be smart enough to differentiate accidental movements from real commands. There's no telling whether the concept will ever make it into an actual notebook, however.
