VIA announces 1W processor

— 6:00 AM on August 24, 2007

VIA has announced an Eden ULV processor with a power envelope of only one watt. Amazingly, the chip consumes one tenth of a watt at idle. Don't expect much in the way of performance, though. The Eden CPU isn't known for its horsepower, and this particular model runs at just 500MHz—one third the clock speed of the fastest Eden VIA sells.

The Eden ULV 500MHz is built on a NanoBGA2 package that measures just 21mm x 21mm, making it ideal for small form factors. Indeed, VIA is targeting the chip at embedded applications alongside its 3.5-watt CX700/M chipset.
