Deal of the week: AMD's Radeon HD 2900 Pro

— 4:13 PM on September 28, 2007

We weren't overwhelmingly impressed with the Radeon HD 2900 XT, but AMD's newly introduced Radeon HD 2900 Pro seems to be a considerably more tantalizing product. The card is based on the exact same GPU as the Radeon HD 2900 XT and features the same specifications except for lower core and memory speeds, but AMD offers it for over $100 less than the full-blown 2900 XT.

As such, for our deal of the week post, we've selected this Sapphire Radeon HD 2900 Pro, which Newegg sells for $264.99. That's $15 more than AMD's recommended price, but it's still awfully cheap for what's essentially an underclocked 2900 XT. Folks interested in the card may not want to wait very long for prices to drop, either: recent rumors suggest the 2900 Pro is only a stopgap until new Radeons emerge in November and that AMD will discontinue the card in late October.
