U.S.-based memory maker Micron Technology has announced a whole host of solid-state drives that are all part of a new RealSSD lineup. The drives are launching with capacities ranging from 1GB to 64GB and in three different product types: RealSSD Solid State Drives, RealSSD Embedded USB drives, and RealSSD Modules.
RealSSD Solid State Drives have the same 1.8" and 2.5" form factors as conventional mobile hard drives. Their capacities go from 8GB to 64GB, and they all have native support for 300MB/s Serial ATA transfer rates. Both 1.8" and 2.5" variants are rated for maximum sustained read and write speeds of 75MB/s and 35MB/s, respectively. Micron says the RealSSD, er, SSDs are currently sampling and that they should hit mass production some time next quarter.
Moving on to the RealSSD Embedded USB drives, those models have 1-8GB capacities and are intended to be integrated into systems via an embedded USB 2.0 interface. In addition to having lower capacities than their hard drive-like siblings, the RealSSD Embedded USB drives are slower, too: sustained read and write speeds are a respective 33MB/s and 23MB/s. They should hit the market quicker, though, with mass production scheduled for the end of this year.
Last, but not least, are RealSSD Modules. Micron says those are "essentially a solid state storage device in a low profile module form factor" aimed at enterprise servers. The modules use SATA interfaces, and they're built with a 25 x 133.5 x 4 mm form factor, or 0.98" x 5.26" x 0.16" in Yank measurements. RealSSD Modules are on a similar schedule as the Embedded USB drives, with mass production scheduled for late 2007.
