Asus launches GeForce 8800 GT 1GB

— 6:00 AM on December 7, 2007

We reported yesterday that Nvidia's new GeForce 8800 GT 256MB graphics card had become available stateside. The card offers a cheaper alternative to the recently launched GeForce 8800 GT 512MB, but Nvidia doesn't yet have a pricier alternative of the same card with more goodies packed on. That doesn't seem to bother Asus, though; the Taiwanese firm has rolled out a GeForce 8800 GT with 1GB of built-in memory.

There's no "GeForce 8800 GT 1GB" on Nvidia's website, so this appears to be an Asus-only deal for the time being. It runs at the same speeds as the regular 8800 GT (600MHz core, 900MHz memory), but Asus says the extra RAM helps it achieve a 10% higher score in 3DMark06. The EN8800GT/HTDP/1G is outfitted with a special "Glaciator Fansink" cooler, too. Asus claims this cooler keeps temperatures 7°C lower than the stock 8800 GT fan and heatsink while producing less noise.
