DVD-R for the home

— 10:20 PM on November 28, 1999

From an information standpoint, this article from Reuters leaves a lot to be desired, but it's exciting news nonetheless. Pioneer has announced that they will release a recordable DVD player, on December 3 in Japan and sometime next year for the U.S. and European markets. As near as I can tell, this announcement refers to a home component unit, which is pretty big news. The player will go for around $2400, with RW discs around $29; a disc will record up to six hours of programming.

Among the many unanswered questions: Will the unit record analog or only digital sources? How will quality compare to pre-recorded DVD? Will it allow for copying of pre-recorded DVD discs? (Just kidding on that last one. I wouldn't hold my breath.) At any rate, hopefully we'll have some more information on this product soon. Depending upon the feature set and quality, it could be a very cool toy. [Update - An anonymous reader sent us this link that has a lot more information on the product.]
