Firefox 3 grabbed over 8 million times in 24 hours

— 3:52 PM on June 19, 2008

As we reported last week, Mozilla hoped to set a world record by challenging users to download Firefox 3 in the first 24 hours after its release. The Firefox 3 launch came and went, and the SpreadFirefox team now says more than eight million users grabbed Firefox 3 between Tuesday and Wednesday.

The download counter is still going, though, and it's now up over the 12 million mark. SpreadFirefox has put together a handy JavaScript world map that shows where the most downloads came from. The U.S. leads the pack with almost 3.6 million downloads, while western Europe looks to have registered about as many. Interestingly, Canada registered almost as many downloads as India and China put together, and more downloads came from the Netherlands than from Russia.

You can check out the interactive map and record information on this page. Mozilla hopes the attempt will become a Guinness World Record.
