Eee PC 901 dips to $499 at some retailers

$600 is a lot to pay for an 8.9" netbook. Yet that's what Asus' Eee PC 901 has cost since its arrival on North American shores two months ago. In puzzling contrast, the bigger and meatier Eee PC 1000H has been available for $50 less these past few weeks.

Asus might have finally set things right, because a look at our price search engine shows several Eee PC 901 flavors available for as little as $499. Right now, Mwave charges that much for the white Eee PC 901 XP, the black Eee PC 901 20G, and the white 901 20G. Amazon, too, has shaved $100 off the prices of all Eee PC 901 models it carries. Don't look for any deals at Newegg just yet, however: the cheapest 901 there costs $579.99 right now.

For the unacquainted, the Eee PC 901 has a teeny form factor, an Intel Atom CPU, 1GB of memory, either 12GB or 20GB of solid-state storage, 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a six-cell battery, and a choice of Linux or Windows XP operating systems. Be sure to check out our review for more details.

Update: The Eee PC 1000H has now dipped to $449.99 at Mwave and $444.49 at Amazon, and the solid-state powered Eee PC 1000 has similarly dipped from $700 to $599.
