NVIDIA DXT1 compression broken?
Ever wonder why Quake III: Arena looks so bad with texture compression enabled? Game Basement began their thought-provoking series of articles (part I, part II, and part III) by asking this simple question and concluding that the NVIDIA DXT1 compression was broken. However, is this a hardware or software problem? Their latest article tries to answer this question and attempts to set the record straight.
First of all, I owe everyone an apology. I've maintained all along that the problems with texture compression on the nVidia GeForce series was not a hardware issue. Correction: there is definitely a hardware problem with compression on the nVidia GeForce series. Don't believe me? I don't blame you. I didn't believe it either.
