New Eee PC 'Seashell' is thin, light, shiny

Hey, guess what? Asus has introduced a new Eee PC netbook. Excited yet? If not, do nonetheless take note that this new system has a sleeker, thinner enclosure than its 10" predecessors and that you can already pre-order it for a very reasonable amount of money in the U.S. and Canada.

Just like the Eee PC 1000HE we reviewed not too long ago, the Eee PC 1008HA "Seashell" has a 10.1" 1024x600 display, one of Intel's 1.66GHz Atom N280 processors, a gig of memory, a 160GB 5,400-RPM hard drive, 802.11n Wi-Fi, and a pre-installed copy of Windows XP Home.

That's pretty much where the major similarities end, because the 1008HA has a noticeably different external design. Namely, where its older brother weighs 3.2 lbs and has a thickness of up to 1.5", the newcomer is only 1.08-1.34" thick and tips the scales at 2.42 lbs. The catch? A smaller battery, for which Asus quotes only up to six hours of run time—down 37% from the 1000HE's 9.5 hours.

That brings us to pricing. The 1008HA has a suggested retail price of $429.99 in the U.S., but you should be able to pre-order one for $409.99 for a "limited time." Just head over to Newegg, Amazon, TigerDirect, ZipZoomFly, or any of the stores listed on this page. Our Canadian friends can do the same and grab a 1008HA for $509.99 CAD instead of $529.99 CAD.
