In the third quarter, AMD managed to post its first "Product Company" profit since the creation of GlobalFoundries, while Intel enjoyed its strongest second-to-third-quarter growth in "over 30 years." How did those results translate on the market share side of things? IDC has the scoop.
According to the research firm, Intel seized 81.1% of global PC microprocessor unit shipments in the third quarter, while AMD nabbed 18.7%, and VIA only scrapped up a fifth of a percent. Here's how the numbers compare to IDC's data from Q3 2008 and Q2 2009:
|Q3 2008||Q2 2009||Q3 2009|
IDC has also included form-factor-specific numbers. In desktops, Intel had 72.2% of the market to AMD's 27.4%. In the mobile market, that ratio shifted to 88% and 11.9%. And in servers and workstations, Intel captured 90.4% of shipments to AMD's 9.6%. Compared to the previous quarter, AMD has seen its share declines in all three markets.
That said, both AMD and Intel benefited from strong microprocessor shipments in the third quarter. IDC writes that unit shipments rose by 23% between the second and third quarters, "approximately double the normal growth in unit shipments for the same period." Revenue went up 14% to $7.4 billion over the same time frame. IDC recorded the strongest growth (35.7%) in the mobile CPU market, but desktop and server CPU shipment growth lay in the double digits, as well.
