Valve gives out free co-op shoot-em-up

— 6:00 AM on July 20, 2010

What's better than a new game? A new game released free of charge by a major developer, of course. Such is the case of Alien Swarm, a co-op shoot-em-up that hit Steam late yesterday.

Created by folks snatched up from the mod community, the game "thrusts players into an epic bug hunt featuring a unique blend of co-op play and squad-level tactics," in Valve's words. Check out the video trailer:

Looking at video above (and the other trailer), Alien Swarm's four-player co-op element reminds me a bit of Left 4 Dead—except, you know, with aliens instead of zombies, a top-down perspective, and a more arcade-inspired design. This game comes as a 2GB download with the "complete game code and mod tools," so modders can presumably get cracking on custom content straight away. Not bad for a freebie.
