Bulletin: CD-ROM drives are dead

— 10:02 AM on December 9, 1999

Just in case you missed the boat on this one: Even the cheapest PC freak has no excuse any more, with DVD drive prices falling below the (US)$60 mark--CD-ROM drives are out. The latest DVD drives double as speedy CD-ROM drives capable of reading CD-RW discs, are quite competent at digital audio extraction (for your MP3 burnin' needs), and the IDE versions often feature UDMA mode transfers for super-low CPU utilization.

Check out reviews of Pioneer's new 10X DVD drive at Screaming3D and PC Extremist for an update on the state o' the art.
