Talk about a novel way to promote your game. The folks behind upcoming cross-platform shooter Bulletstorm have released a free mini-FPS that pokes fun at the Call of Duty series, featuring a parody of "realistic" war gameplay laden with cheesy cut-scenes and absurd plot elements.
Entitled Duty Calls: The Calm Before the Storm, the parody shooter is available as a free, 758MB download from thedutycalls.com. A teaser video has made it onto YouTube, as well:
I couldn't resit taking a short break from more serious work and giving this thing a shot. The gameplay portion only lasts a few minutes, but it's worth the download just for the hilarious ranking-up after every kill and the final cutscene, which involves a crying enemy boss, fireworks, and U.S. flags sticking out of your character's thumbs. The game ends with a trailer that pimps Bulletstorm with the tagline, "Kill with skill."
People Can Fly's Bulletstorm is due out on February 22 for the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. If anything, the title looks like a departure from the dreadfully boring status quo.
