SMT, take three

HardwareCentral's Vince Freeman, late of ExtremeHW, does his take on SMT (simultaneous multi-threading).

With the incredible upsurge in processor clock speeds, there is some concern that this sort of brute force approach is taking us down a dead end street. While rising MHz ratings will undoubtedly lead to higher performance, what about the trade-off in additional power and heat? Better manufacturing techniques and core materials will help, but at some point the microprocessor industry is going to have to look at the theory of processor conservation, or simply doing more with less.
The rest is here; TR's take is here.
Tip: You can use the A/Z keys to walk threads.
