What's really coming from Intel on Monday?

— 1:05 AM on December 16, 1999

We reported yesterday (see previous story) that Intel will announce its 750 and 800 MHz Pentium IIIs on Monday. However, this product announcement may not, in fact, be the same kind of announcement Intel has staged in the past. Traditionally, Intel has shipped and, really, filled the supply pipeline with new processors before announcing them. However, discussion about yesterdays news item here produced some question about what was actually taking place on Monday. Now, the blokes at The Register are saying that Intel may announce their 750 and 800 MHz CPUs Monday, but only begin sampling the PIII 800 at that time. If true, 800 MHz chips may not make it out the door until February or March--at least, Intel's 800MHz chips, anyhow.
