Oh dear. John Romero is making another PC game. You might remember Romero's work at id Software, where he served as a designer for classics like Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, and Quake. You might also remember Romero leaving id to form Ion Storm, which went on to produce the widely panned Daikatana. Romero has bounced around since, working on games for everything from the ill-fated N-Gage to social media platforms, but his next project will target the PC.
Eurogamer has the goods on the new title, which will be an old-school shooter with MMO influences. Romero isn't a fan of the slow pace and cover systems popularized by console shooters; he wants to bring back fast, skillful movement, which requires a keyboard and mouse. There's no indication that Romero's upcoming game will be a PC exclusive, but he does say it's being developed for the PC platform first.
I have to admit that I never played Daikatana. The reviews were scathing, and I was far too busy fueling a Counter-Strike addiction at the time. However, after recently enjoying the old-school shooter sensibilities of Serious Sam 3: BFE, I'm curious to see what Romero is cooking up. Surely, the man who coined the term "deathmatch" has a few good ideas left.
