Almost exactly one year ago, we learned that a new chapter in the Carmageddon franchise was in the works. The Stainless Games studio behind Carmageddon: Reincarnation has since turned to Kickstarter, and the funding drive is already well on its way to reaching its goal of $400,000. Over 8,000 folks have backed the game thus far, and there are 16 days left to pledge your own hard-earned cash. A contribution of $15 entitles backers to a copy of the game, which will be released on Steam. Offer more, and you’ll gain access to exclusive discussion forums, receive multiple copies, and even have the opportunity to appear as a pedestrian, among other perks. Here’s the official pitch:

Stainless Games apparently spent all its spare change buying back the rights to Carmageddon and doing initial development work on Reincarnation. The studio claims raising $400,000 will allow it to release the reboot by February of next year—without any meddling from external investors or publishers. That should allow Reincarnation to match the over-the-top excess of the first two Carmageddon games. Indeed, five of the eight people responsible for the original are working on the new release.

Carmageddon: Reincarnation is coming to the PC first, and it looks like we’ll be treated to some DirectX 11 eye candy. The team is promising mod support, as well, and LAN play will be available even in the absence of an Internet connection. Sounds like a good recipe to me.

I loved the first two Carmageddon games, so I’m going to, er, kick in for the new one. It’s been far too long since I received a Cunning Stunt bonus. Thanks to Rock, Paper, Shotgun for the tip.
