EA is still reeling from the disastrous Sim City launch (and the subsequent departure of its CEO). Luckily, it's got plenty of other cash cows to provide misdirection. As GameSpot reports, EA now says it will unveil the next chapter in the Battlefield series next week, on March 26.
This isn't the first time we've heard about Battlefield 4. Last July, EA encouraged people to pre-order the Limited Edition of Medal of Honor Warfighter, saying those who did would be rewarded with a spot in an "exclusive" Battlefield 4 beta this fall. Well, I guess that wasn't much of a consolation prize for the awfulness of Warfighter—but on the upside, it did give us a sense of when to expect BF4.
According to GameSpot, next week's grand unveiling will take place at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. The invitation, which looks like it was cobbled together by John Riccitiello's eight-year-old nephew, reads, "Please join us to celebrate a new era of Battlefield."
I hope the "new era" part means we'll be treated to something original this time—you know, something other than the done-to-death "modern warfare" trope and its assortment of Middle Eastern and Russian baddies. Maybe they really outdid themselves, and we'll get to sample a gritty reenactment of the Battle of Khitomer.
Or, you know, maybe they just set this one in North Korea.
Yeah, it's probably that.
