Cue outraged gasps. Yes, it seems the new Wolfenstein game will be a single-player only affair. GameSpot broke the news yesterday, and it says it has received confirmation from both Bethesda, the game's publisher, and MachineGames, the Swedish studio that's developing it.
I'm sure some folks will bemoan the absence of team-based Nazi killin', but you know what? I like this recent trend of single-player-only titles. BioShock Infinite and Dishonored both lacked multiplayer components, and they were both terrific. The former could have used more exciting gameplay, but it was beautiful and engrossing, with one of the best stories in a shooter to date. And as for Dishonored, I loved just about every minute of that game.
It's still too early to tell if Wolfenstein: The New Order will be anywhere near as good, of course. But at least the folks making it don't sound like they're trying to make a quick buck. Creative Director Jens Matthies told GameSpot, "If there's a video game museum, Wolfenstein is in the first room. It's the start of the wave that shaped the world of gaming." He added, "On a personal level, I played this when I was younger and it was mind-blowing . . . I never then of course dreamed that I was going to be working with it. It's both an honor and a legacy."
The New Order is due out in the fourth quarter of this year for the PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and next-gen consoles. It will use the same id Tech 5 engine technology as id Software's Rage.
