AMD doesn't usually get much love in the ultrathin market, but that may be in the process of changing thanks to the company's new Kabini APUs. Samsung has just announced the ATIV Book 9 Lite, a 13.3" ultrathin with AMD guts, solid-state storage, and a $799.99 price tag. This bad boy is coming to U.S. stores on July 28.
Samsung's press release is rather vague on the subject of the ATIV Book 9 Lite's processor. It mentions a "Quad Core Processor" with a 1.4GHz top clock speed and Radeon graphics. According to the guys over at AnandTech, this mystery quad-core chip is indeed a Kabini part. The core count and clock speed don't exactly correspond to current members of the Kabini lineup, though. The closest match is the A4-5000, which has four cores, a 1.5GHz clock speed, a 15W TDP, and Radeon HD 8330 graphics.
The ATIV Book 9 Lite otherwise has pretty pedestrian specs for a mid-range ultrabook. The 13.3" display has a 1366x768 resolution and capacitive touch input. There's 4GB of DDR3 memory, a 128GB solid-state drive, and a battery rated for up to 5.5 hours of run time. Connectivity includes Mini VGA, Micro HDMI, USB 2.0, USB 3.0, a card reader, and analog audio in and out.
All told, the ATIV Book 9 Lite weighs 3.48 lbs and fits into a chassis that's just 0.69" thick. It's pretty slick-looking, too, if the picture above is any indication. My only gripe is that the battery life isn't any better, but I suppose 5.5 hours isn't far from the run times we got out of our A4-5000 whitebook in May.
Update 7/17: Samsung tells us that 5.5-hour run time was obtained in MobileMark 12. The ATIV Book 9 Lite can purportedly achieve a much higher run time of 8.5 hours in MobileMark 7.
