Despite the more general downturn in the industry, the PC gaming market reportedly grew 8% last year. EA's latest financial figures also suggest the PC gaming market is doing well. Surprisingly, though, the PC doesn't seem to be a priority for EA head Peter Moore. In an interview with Engadget, Moore named the transition to next-gen consoles as EA's biggest focus. Mobile platforms based on iOS and Android are right behind it, Moore said, with the PC relegated to third string.
New consoles don't come around very often, so I'm not surprised that EA is putting so much emphasis on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. In each year since 2009, the firm has derived more revenue from PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 games than it has from PC titles—and that's from each of those consoles individually. For that same period, EA has generated less revenue from mobile games than it has from PC titles. The split between those two was particularly stark last year, when EA's mobile game revenue was less than half its take from the PC world.
Moore actually doesn't name the PC in a general sense. EA's third biggest priority is actually free-to-play titles on the PC. According to Moore, the free-to-play experience needs to be a part of every EA franchise. He doesn't say traditional blockbusters are going away, but it looks like we'll see freemium offshoots for all the big names.
Moore isn't the only one bullish about free-to-play titles on the PC, either. Earlier this year, Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli told VentureBeat that the freemium approach is "the only business model his company will use for its games in two to five years."
