Deal of the week: Solid-state drives and IPS screens

— 5:14 PM on January 13, 2014

We skipped our regularly scheduled deal o' the week post last Friday, but fear not; we've singled out a few discounts for you guys today.

  • The first one is Samsung's 840 Pro 256GB solid-state drive, which is on sale at Newegg for $194.99 after the $5-off promo code EMCYTZT5439. Yes, that's more per gigabyte than you'd pay for a drive like Samsung's own 840 EVO 250GB, but the 840 Pro gets you a full 256GB of storage capacity, and it's quite a bit faster. Last time I checked, this drive sold for close to $250. At $195, it's a bargain.
  • Also in the storage department, Western Digital's Green 4TB hard drive is on sale for only $154.99 after the $14-off promo code EMCYTZT5443. This drive is much slower than an SSD, but it's more than quick enough for mass-storage duties. And with 4TB of capacity, there's plenty of room for movies, music, Linux ISOs, and other bulky files.
  • Our third deal today is Asus' VS239H-P monitor, a 23" IPS offering that's down to a scant $159.99 after a $10 mail-in rebate at Newegg. This monitor has a 1920x1080 resolution, dynamic contrast, 250cd/m² luminosity, and 178° horizontal and vertical viewing angles—a telltale sign of IPS panel technology. Connectivity includes DVI, HDMI, and VGA, and there's even a DVI cable in the box. Judging by the four-star rating average out of 107 reviews, this is a popular solution.

We haven't spotted any other juicy hardware deals stateside, but there are some bargains to be found north of the border in NCIX's Viva Las Savings sale. Among them: an XFX Core Edition 550W power supply for $49.99 CAD after a $10 mail-in rebate and a 120GB Samsung 840 EVO SSD for $109.99 CAD. With the loonie sinking against the U.S. dollar, those prices are even better than they seem.
