iOS 8 may add Win8-style split-screen multitasking

Apple rarely shies away from copying good ideas. One of the most recent examples is iOS's notification center, which behaves an awful lot like Android's notifications panel. Now, according to 9to5Mac, Apple may be about to nab another feature from a competitor: split-screen multitasking.

The site quotes "sources with knowledge of the enhancement in development" as saying that iOS will introduce a split-screen multitasking feature. That feature, the site says, will let users "run and interact with two iPad applications at once."

Here's a mockup of what split-screen multitasking might look like in iOS, courtesy of 9to5Mac:

The benefits of using two applications on the same screen are obvious. In a modal interface like iOS or Windows 8's Modern UI mode, a split-screen mode is probably the best way to offer that kind of functionality. I'm not thrilled with the way it's implemented in Windows 8, though. There seem to be too many opportunities to enable it by accident, and it feels a little awkward. Here's hoping Apple—if it does borrow the feature—will do a cleaner job.
