Apple and IBM have announced an "exclusive partnership" that will bring IBM's "big data and analytics capabilities" to iOS. The effort is based on four core "capabilities," which the press release outlines as the following:
The industry-specific apps will target retail, healthcare, banking, and insurance segments, among others. They'll start appearing this fall, with more to come next year. Corporate customers will be able to purchase iPhones and iPads directly from IBM, and leasing options will be available, as well.
Speaking to Recode about the partnership, Apple CEO Tim Cook described IBM as just the right fit. "We do not compete on anything," he said, "and when you do that you end up with something better than either of you could produce yourself." IBM CEO Ginni Rometty was also interviewed by the site. She said the deal would enable the two firms to "remake professions and unlock value that companies don't yet have."
