Geoff wrote about Haswell-E motherboards this morning. Now, we've got some fresh dirt on the CPU itself.
Malaysian overclocker Owikh84 has posted a picture of what he claims to be a Haswell-E processor, the Core i7-5960X, with its heat spreader sliced off. The delidding procedure clearly wrecked the chip, and that's the interesting part here: according to Owikh84, Intel "soldered the chip's die to the IHS [integrated heat spreader] with a strong epoxy." I'm not sure epoxy technically qualifies as solder, but either way, the image shows the silicon torn asunder with a piece of it still stuck to the IHS.
Owikh84 believes the epoxy will offer "much better heat conductivity" than the non-adhesive thermal compound Intel uses on current Haswell and Devil's Canyon CPUs. This dude is "[o]ne of the most respected OverClocker [sic] here in Malaysia," according to the bio in the news story, so I'll take his word for it. The most extreme overclocking I've done involved a cuckoo clock and a bottle of tequila.
As Geoff said this morning, Haswell-E is probably fairly close to launch, since X99 motherboards have entered the Windows 8.1 certification stage. I expect we'll get to overclock one for ourselves before long.
