ISPs to be common carriers under new FCC rules

— 12:42 PM on February 26, 2015

As Reuters reports, the Federal Communications Commission has voted to reclassify ISPs as common carriers.

According to the news agency, the new FCC rules will "ban Internet providers from blocking and unfairly slowing down any web traffic on their pipes or striking deals with content companies for faster or smoother downloads, among other things."

The vote took place "along party lines," Reuters says, with three in favor and two opposed.

Update: The full announcement from the FCC is now accessible here. FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler has also issued a separate statement about today's ruling.
