When we talk about VR here, we usually talk about the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive. Samsung's Gear VR is a major platform in its own right, too. The Gear VR is only $100, but it requires a recent Samsung smartphone to operate and lacks some of the niceties of the other HMDs. It does have one major advantage, though—it's readily available. Oculus is now looking to widen the appeal of the Gear VR by making it easier for customers to find and share VR content.
For starters, Oculus is updating its Oculus Home software for the Gear VR. The big change in this version seems to be a greater highlight on content discovery and improved UI navigation. While games are a big part of the Gear VR experience, Oculus says almost 80% of users view VR videos on their devices, and seven of its 10 most popular apps are for video.
To fill this demand, the VR company is touting a few new VR shows (including some from major networks like Discovery), a change that meshes well with the content-discovery improvements. Oculus says the update for Oculus Home will come in June to all Gear VR users.
The Gear VR will also be getting the ability to view Facebook 360-degree photos in VR soon. Oculus isn't really clear about what that entails, other than displaying the 360-degree photos in a way that's natural for use with the Gear VR. Oculus says this feature is coming in the next few weeks.
