AOL, Time Warner to merge

— 11:46 AM on January 10, 2000

I'm sure most people have already heard--kind of hard to miss two elephants tap dancing--but AOL and Time Warner have agreed to merge. Yahoo News has it as their top story, as do CNN, MSNBC, CNET, and many others. Slashdot cynically responds to the merger with:

Now you'll be able to get all your Internet needs, from connectivity to content to shopping, delivered by a single experienced company. No more need to deal with Web sites that stray from the party line, take risks (and screw up now and then), or any of that other messy old-fashioned "Internet as anarchy" stuff. To get online in the future, all you'll need to do is plug in your computer, turn off your brain, and enjoy!
They've got a good point, but this kind of merger is inevitable with the current business climate. I guess we'll see what happens. The big question I have is, "Are Road Runner customers now considered AOLers?!?"
