Storage Review's new drive reliability database

— 5:53 PM on October 27, 2001

Storage Review is doing something I think is long overdue: they're assembling a hard drive reliability database with user input from the field, and they intend to keep it up to date.

It requires (free) registration, and submitting an entry means they'll contact you periodically by email for a status report on the drive, to keep the database up-to-date (they say "months" between contacts—since they are measuring drive lifetime in quarters, I'm guessing that's how often the emails will come). They've already got a couple thousand entries, plus a results browser; an analysis engine is in the works.

Considering some recent events *cough*IBM 75GXP*cough*, this is an idea whose time has come. Register and submit entries here.
